Tumblr have just rolled out their new 3.0 version of their Android app (and possibly iOS too) complete with a new interface, notification area, and added their new post option logo’s, a welcome change from the dated previous version.
First I had to log in, they’ve also changed the look of the initial log in screen, they’re really not holding back! They claimed that it’s quicker, but I was left waiting for a good 30 seconds before anything showed up but after exploring, closing and re-opening, it actually is a notch faster!
The dashboard seems a little cluttered now they’ve added “reblogged from” to each reblogged post as well as adding all of the tags and sources to them too, it takes away the clean feel from the previous version of the app. They’ve made the reblog button and the like button a lot bigger too which is great as I always struggled to hit the right one on the previous version. It’s a little confusing at first, thing’s don’t seem like they’re in the right place, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.
They’ve added a neat little “Radar” feature showing today’s most popular posts which is a nice touch though, at first a little slow to load all of the images.
There’s a new “Profile” area that has everything you could need as well as a little Notifications page, so you can see who’s followed you, reblogged you and liked your posts. I think this is a good move because it looks like they’ve taken each notification away from the dashboard so your dash will seem less cluttered with “likes” and “blah blah reblogged your post” Overall, it seems like a much better interface, keeping your dash separate from your personal notifications and it’s a lot faster than before, it’s just a shame they’ve made posts look a little messy!
Update: The ever lasting .gif battle seems to have been solved (maybe), now instead of displaying a slightly transparent (gif) logo on the picture, you can now tap on the picture, it loads it up on a separate screen (but doesn’t open up the browser) and the gif plays. There’s also a handy “like” or “reblog” icon at the top so you can choose what to do once you’ve seen the picture in more detail.
Update 2: After a days use I’m starting to find the app a little hard to get along with. Images seldom show up, they’ve tried to implicate the photo sets into their correct positioning instead of the manual slide show in the previous version, but the images don’t adjust to the mobile platform so half of the images are missing, I actually have no idea what images are gifs because of the lack of (gif) icon and trying to check my sub blogs posts is close to impossible, I’ve been logged out several times at complete random and then told “Network not available” and my dash is getting refreshed when I’m half way down viewing posts. Absolutely atrocious! I hope there’s an update rolling out soon! Sort it out tumblr!
Update 3: Over the past week they’ve been rolling out updates that make very little improvements, and I think they’ve been listening because the (gif) circle has come back! Also, I’m not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but if you click on the picture you want to view in the lightbox if you keep swiping to the left, it goes through all of the pictures that user has posted. If it’s a feature, it’s pretty cool, especially if you’re looking through a themed blog like http://thepolarbearblog.tumblr.com If it’s a bug, then hopefully they’ll get it fixed. Another bug I’ve found is that Read Mores don’t work, instead of the usual “Read More ->” link, its replaced with [[MORE]] followed by the Read More content.
Update 4: I recently received this fan mail on my tumblr page: It’s nice that they’ve taken some notice! :)
