Released a few days ago (21st August) Counter-Strike: Global Offensive became available for download on Xbox Live Arcade for 1200 MS Points.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Counter-Strike Series – Counter Strike was originally a modification to Half-Life but due to it’s popularity Valve Software – the original developer to create Half-Life began assisting the development of Counter Strike. Around the year 2000 Valve bought the rights to Counter Strike and from there, there have been six Counter Strike variations; Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Source, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Counter-Strike Neo, and Counter-Strike: Online.
Counter-Strike’s main and original game mode is very similar to the standard Search and Destroy game mode you’d find on Call of Duty. Players choose either Terrorists or Counter-Terrorists and must complete an objective or eliminate enemy players to win the game. Once a player is eliminated they don’t respawn and must wait until the next round begins.
The Popularity of the Counter-Strike series is probably down to it’s simplicity and how easy it is just to jump in and play. There’s no customising your load out, everyone begins with either a pistol or their dagger and players must then earn money by completing the objective or eliminating other players to buy better weapons in the in game menu at the beginning of each round. Some servers are set so that players begin with or without money, the standard amount to begin with is around $500-600.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive takes on pretty much the same ideals as the original Counter-Strike game but with better graphics, new maps, and weapons such as the Molotov Cocktail that temporarily covers a small area with fire that’s impossible to pass without getting burned..
The game so far also features 4 different game modes, Bomb Defusal (S&D), Hostage Rescue – Counter Terrorist players must rescue the hostage and get them back to the extraction point whilst also defending the hostage from Terrorist Players. There are also two new game modes based on the popular gungame mod for CS and CS:S and they are Arms Race and Demolition. Arms Race is a deathmatch type game where players earn new weapons for each kill and the player to get a kill with all weapons wins the game, similar to Gun Game on Call of Duty: Black Ops. Demolition is a round based game that removes the weapon purchase system completely and each player begins with a set of fairly weak weapons for each kill.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has been in Beta for a few months, but it’s now available on PC, Mac, XBLA and the PSN!
