Assassin’s Creed 3 At Eurogamer – A New Assassin Joins The Creed

So with the effects of Eurogamer Expo sadly wearing off its time to talk about everything we saw, played, experienced and also couldn’t really be bothered to queue for! One game I did wait for and surprisingly it wasn’t that long of a wait was Assassin’s Creed 3, The game I’ve been looking forward to ever since it was first announced. There were 3 choices of things to do when you got to the front of the queue. Play a sequence from assassin’s creed and test our new protagonist, Play part of the new addition to the franchise with Naval warfare or both. I chose to test out Connor and what he was all about.

The mission was set in Fort Walcott, a fort set high atop a cliff inhabited with red coats. Connor has found himself at the bottom of said cliff and only one way up. So starts the mission and it couldn’t of been a better introduction to the new game, doing something new that wasn’t done in previous games – Scaling a large rock face. And it was great, the foot and handholds weren’t too obvious so it had a realism to it where you were looking for your next move and there was sometimes two different ways to go up. Instantly you can see Connor moves in a different way to Altaïr and Ezio, He’s more like an animal than a man. Once you reach the top and dispatch a red coat with a classic ledge assassination you get your first view of America. It isn’t a huge city, its a fort and there are not a lot of buildings in it but the structures you can see you notice the detail that has gone in to making it look like as realistic as possible then you realize what’s going on underneath you. Red coats, red coats everywhere and it’s with the sight of them that gives you a grim thought that you’re actually in deep over you hood (head). Luckily Connor decides to take the more discreet route around and go through the walls and barracks.

The objective of the game is to locate what looked to be a part of a map locked away and hidden in the prison part of the fort. Obviously there’s ‘friends’ on the way and a secondary objective is to stay hidden. This is a perfect chance to test out the new wall hugging technique and what I liked and didn’t know you could do was whistle, to grab the attention of the guards, and then from  the shadows comes the hidden blade. After making your way to the objective chaos ensues with cannon fire from your ship on the fort, this provides a great distraction for you to escape the now flame engulfed fort. This is where we get to test out Connor’s free running abilities, ducking under fallen beams, sliding over benches and sliding down fallen floors. The escape is fluid, fast and it doesn’t feel forced, in the sense that you know you’re following a route to get out but it doesn’t feel like it.

The mission ends with the fabled leap of faith and you board your ship to leave for your next destination. Sadly I didn’t get to play the Naval Battle sequence so I’ve added the video underneath for your viewing pleasure. Keep a close eye on more updates from my experiences at Eurogamer Expo 2012.
