Yesterday saw Bungies big reveal of their new game Destiny. It was big on hype, but small on details as all that was really released was the video (above) and the launch of the website and pre-order pages. Since then most online gaming publications have put their two cents in and have written something about the game, some speculation, some release actual details; this post is going to gather all of the information and put it right here…
First off; here’s a description from the site’s forum:
“Everything changed with the arrival of the Traveler. It sparked a Golden Age when our civilization spanned our solar system, but it didn’t last. Something hit us, knocked us down. The survivors built a city beneath the Traveler, and have begun to explore our old worlds, only to find them filled with deadly foes.
You are a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth, able to wield incredible power. Defend the City. Defeat our enemies. Reclaim all that we have lost.”
- Key features:
- The next evolution of entertainment – an incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe filled with action and adventure.
- Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customized weapons, gear and vehicles.
- Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre breaks traditional conventions of story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, combined with public and social activities.
Here’s some news from VG24/7. They’ve confirmed that Destiny is ready for “future-gen” games consoles. So if you’re planning on pre-ordering the game, I’d hold out until the launch of the next-gen consoles. Unfortunately we’ve got a GTA V vibe on our hands with no word on a PC release. VG24/7 made a bold quote “with Bungie claiming that “nobody” uses a keyboard and mouse any more.” but Bungie COO Pete Persons told the Examiner “We would absolutely love to be on the PC. If you talk to the people upstairs, we play it on all platforms. So, stay tuned” As soon as we know, you’ll know!
The game has reported to be always online; assuming that the game is entirely multiplayer with no word on an option for single-offline play so far. It’s also been reported that the game won’t be cross platform (like most online console games) and that most likely includes next-gen consoles too. Much like the rumored next-gen xbox console, an internet connection is required to play the game.
The game has been described as a “quasi-massively multiplayer sci-fi experience” (according to IGN) that’s always connected. A huge shared world with sandbox elements will also be included as well as procedurally generated missions. Perhaps this is has something to do with the 10 year plan Bungie has with this game.
All of the pre-order sites are now live, with Tesco remaining the cheapest at £40.00 (Amazon, GAME, and Sainsbury’s have it listed at £44.99). Tesco also has the release date of 31.12.13 on the website, but that seems to just be a generic date with this disclaimer written below “This release date is unconfirmed by Bungie and is used solely for systemic reasons.” and other publications are saying that there’s a January 2014 release noted.
Bungie have teamed up with Activision with a 10 year publishing contract in hand. I’d like to think that the game could last for 10 years but I’m sure there’s going to be a Destiny 2 and 3 in the works. According Joystiq who has an old copy of the agreement between Bungie and Activision there’s mention of “multiple titles and downloadable-content expansions to be released during the 10-year contract between Bungie and Activision”.
That’s pretty much all that’s available so far, other than the odd article having a moan about the PC release being held back for the moment (if ever) the actual game-play is pretty much still wrapped up though what we’ve heard/seen so far seems pretty awesome.
