The following review represents a game still in development.
When a developer CCP put forward the idea for a first person shooter set in the already established universe of EVE online, offering cross game and platform play you can’t help but fill with excitement. Actions in one game would affect the political and economic status of the other. Once again however I find myself baffled at the false promises of a game that would be ground breaking and unique if i wasn’t finding myself looking at what can only be described as a mess.
DUST 514 is, at it’s core a standard first person shooter which offers nothing new to the market. You have a simple gunplay mechanic, optional vehicles and support options, rewards, character development, load outs and more. True it all has a nice EVE online feel to it and everywhere you look the game is wrapped in the law of the universe. That said it doesn’t hide the fact that the core gameplay offers nothing new. As a matter of fact it is one of the dullest first person shooter experiences I’ve ever had. It’s slow, lacking and overall filled with poor design choices which lead to the game just falling apart. Okay sure, DUST 514 gives the player the chance to make history in the ever growing EVE universe but when the game is no fun, why would they? In todays industry state I would like to think that we had out grown the days of poor development choices but DUST 514 does just that. From slow respawn, countless menus, base camping and much more. It all just ruins the experience.
Now hang on, you say, slow respawn and base camping? How is that an issue? Surely this is present in every online game. Well no, it’s not. At least not to the level that DUST 514 is suffering from. My example here is the placement of spawn points. They are on locations within the maps which are easily accessible by both teams. Moore often then not in wide open areas. On multiple occasions I would find myself loading in from a black screen only to be shoot instantly in the back by a camper. This may sound like pointless moaning but let me reassured you this isn’t the case. The level of simple design choices that DUST 514 suffers from past that of a simple rant. It’s awful.
Moving on from the gameplay may I just mention the graphics and sound. I understand the game is currently in beta but my oh my is this game ugly both on the eyes and ears. Low poly models, draw distance issues, horrible sound, low Quality textures and even frame rate issues are all present. It’s a technical mess and one of the worst of it’s kind I’ve seen on the Playstation 3. This should, and I hope it is, be fixed in updates but the current state of DUST 514 is that it’s broken, lacking and overall just awful. It’s was one of my most anticipated games of the year but now I can’t wait for it to uninstall.
I’ll close this up now as I could easily keep going on about all my faults with DUST 514 for some time. What is important for you to know and understand is that as a shooter DUST 514 doesn’t deliver anything new. It’s dull, slow, annoying and a broken mess. Why it was released even as a beta in it’s current state I’ll never know. As an extension to the EVE online universe it adds some nice depth to the already existing law. In terms of the cross play features however I failed to see how they were implemented anyway.
Overall DUST 514 is a disappointment on many fronts. I can’t recommend this game one bit. I’m sure that for some people this will be there thing but for myself and many more, DUST 514 is a failure. With that said I’m off to terminate my solider’s presents within it’s universe.
