The Indie Fix

The Indie FixWelcome to The Indie Fix, a weekly column in which we take a look at the latest indie release and titles that may have slipped under the radar. This week we’ll be taking a look at the high-action, co-op RPG, Legends of Aethereus!

Funded back in July of 2012, Legends of Aethereus gained $10,000 over it’s initial goal of, $25,000. As with most Indie games these days, Kickstarter funding is a great way to get the project started and gain attention. One thing did surprise me, the goal was incredibly low for a game of this calibre. Take a look at the most recent Kickstarter funded games, Richard Garriot’s upcoming, Shroud of the Avatar, has a goal of one million dollars.

But what developer, Threegates, have done with their budget so far, shows some incredible progress. We gained access to the current build of the game, a single-player closed beta, which is currently in the public domain for those who chose to back the project.

Currently in the single-player build, you’re allowed to embark on a series of story driven quests and expeditions. The story is pretty interesting and tells tales of ancient lore and puts you right in the centre of the action. Other missions include exploration quests, which are pretty great themselves.

The game is beautifully crafted and graphically is stunning. Although the engine can be a bit sluggish at times, the game world itself is full of gorgeous locations. Character progression drives you through the game, with an eclectic set of skill trees for each class, and deploying points into stats pushes you forward. LoA-06

The combat system is physics based, allowing the use of traps, set-up weapons (such as turrets) and the use of your environment to overcome the enemy.

There isn’t much to say about the game at the moment, as it is only in a single player build, but it’s what is scheduled to be released that is the most interesting about, Legends of Aethereus.

Multiplayer co-op is yet to be introduced, allowing adventuring with up to four players, joining others on quests and expeditions to seek riches and fame in Aethereus. Co-op RPG’s are always a huge amount of fun, and this high-action game would be a lot better with others. PvP will also be introduced in later builds, in some shape or form.

LoA 2Threegates have also added a feature which allows you to invite your friends to your own personalised cities. Customising these cities will allow the player to build statues, banners and use these to decorate their cities.

Although there isn’t too much to go on at the moment, Legends of Aethereus, is an intriguing indie RPG. The landscapes are beautifully crafted in the impressive engine. Character progression and combat puts that excitement into LoA, but what we’re really looking forward to, is the promised multiplayer mechanics.
