Xperia Z S III Homescreens

The Samsung Galaxy S III has been comfortably topping mobile phone charts since its launch in May last year, but now a new mobile has launched that could threaten its pole position. The Xperia Z is the new flagship device from Sony going up against the Galaxy S3 in a bid to be crowned the number one smartphone.

Both certainly pack a punch when it comes to specs, but which handset should you choose? Often when we buy mobile phones we’re looking for specific features such as an excellent camera or a powerful processor that can cope with graphics-heavy gaming. But which of these will satisfy your needs? Well, we’ve compiled this comparison to put them both to the test…

Xperia Z S III Screens Off

Round 1: Design

When you put these mobiles side by side it’s clear to see that the Xperia Z is the more sleek and sophisticated device. The Galaxy S III’s polycarbonate shell feels comfortable in the hand, but has a slightly cheap build quality. In comparison, the Xperia Z is tougher and has more of a premium look about it, and its chassis is completely dust and water resistant too.

Winner: Xperia Z

The Galaxy S III boasts a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED 720p display that offers vivid and bright image reproduction. When you place it next to the Xperia Z’s 5-inch LCD 1080p screen Sony’s flagship is the clear winner as it offers crisper, more detailed visuals. This is because the Galaxy S III features PenTile technology that uses only two-thirds of the subpixels, which basically means the sharpness of the images is reduced.

Winner: Xperia Z

Round 3: Power

Both of these mobiles house a quad-core processor, so they are two of the fastest and most powerful smartphones available. The Xperia Z processor just about trumps the Galaxy S III’s, clocking in at 1.5GHz in comparison to the Samsung’s 1.4GHz. However, the Xperia Z also has 2GB RAM, whereas the Galaxy S III only has 1GB. When faced with tasks such as heavy multitasking, both devices perform similarly, but judging by the specs the Xperia Z is equipped to cope better.

Winner: Xperia Z

Camera Comparison

Round 4: Camera

The Galaxy S III’s 8 megapixel camera can hold its own against any other smartphone around, producing  bright images with true colour representations even in low-light , as well as offering 1080p video recording. The Xperia Z’s 13 megapixel snapper produces images that are crisp and detailed, but in our camera test the Galaxy S III produced the better photo. This shows that photo quality isn’t purely down to pixel count.

Winner: Galaxy S III

To see which smartphone is the best for gaming, we downloaded Temple Run 2 on each of them and had a play. The Galaxy S III was comfortable and easy to hold, and the display produced really vibrant colours. However, the Xperia Z loaded the game faster and seemed a touch more responsive, and the images were more sharp and detailed on the handset’s large 1080p display.

Winner: Xperia Z

So, which is the best smartphone? Well, six months ago the Galaxy S III would have been the hands-down winner and the sheriff of all mobile-ville. But there’s a new kid in town, and it looks slicker and outperforms the old Galaxy S III in many areas. The Xperia Z does come out on top in terms of design, display, power and gaming and because of this, manages to trump the Galaxy S III.

However, it’s only a matter of months before the Galaxy S IV is due to land, and when this new Samsung flagship arrives it will mix things up again. So, Sony may have the crown for now, but it might not be for long. If you’d like to find out more about our winner, the Sony Xperia Z, take a look at our hands-on video review above.
