In a surprising announcement, Nintendo today revealed that they are working on a direct sequel to the SNES classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The SNES original is widely considered one of the best in the series, and certainly the best of the top-down Zelda games.
The new game retains the top-down gameplay of the original, but with more modern 3D-rendered graphics replacing the flat sprites of the classic SNES game. Although the gameplay is top-down, the game will make use of the 3D functionality of the 3DS to more clearly show levels of depth. Not much is known yet about the game, only a short video was shown as part of today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast.
It was mentioned during the announcement that a 3D video would be made available to download from the Nintendo 3DS eShop, so if you’re as excited about this as I am, get to the eShop now!
