The software is only in beta at the moment but the Cupertino manufacturer has confirmed that not all features will be available on all of its devices. As such only the iPhone 5, which is available on a range of T-Mobile contracts, and the fifth generation iPod Touch will receive the full iOS 7 treatment.
As well as an aesthetics make over, which sees the introduction of pastel colours, simplified fonts, and an overall more attractive and vibrant interface, iOS 7 comes with a wealth of new features to take multitasking to a whole new level. Here we take a look at some of the best…
The revamped interface is largely based on swiping gestures, granting users instant access to their most used controls and apps.
A swipe from the top of the display reveals a transparent panel, which is the hub of the Control Centre. It features brightness and Wi-Fi settings and quick access to the torch, timer, calculator and camera. Music controls, which were formerly found on the old multitasking bar at the bottom, have also been included.
Notifications on iOS 7 come in the form of a full screen affair informing users about new mail, missed calls, to-do lists and much more. Also on board is a new feature called ‘Today’ which gives users a brief summary of their day at a glance, whether it be someone’s birthday, weather and traffic updates , as well as a look at what’s on your agenda for tomorrow. The notification centre can be accessed by swiping down from the top of the display, even when the handset is locked.
Air Drop provides a new way of sharing content from within apps between other iDevices, whether it is photos, videos or contacts.
Simply open an app, find something you want to share, and providing its supported by a ‘Share Sheet’, tap the button and you can send it to other enabled devices nearby. Air Drop uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for instant transfers, and all the content you share is encrypted so it’s kept as secure as possible.
iOS 7 is hugely intuitive and quickly learns which apps you like to use and when, so it can update content before you even launch them. So if you regularly check your Facebook account at 9am every day the updated feed will be ready and waiting. Not only does this enhance multitasking but it makes your user experience swifter than ever.
While things may look completely different to anything previously seen from Apple, the way in which you go about your everyday smartphone tasks will feel very similar to previous iterations of the software. iOS 7 perfectly combines great looks and functionality, and is a refreshing new take on Apple’s already hugely successful mobile platform.
