GTA V: 2 discs plus mandatory 8GB install, also no plans for next gen. We’ve got two lovely handfuls of information regarding the most anticipated title of the year GTA V. The first is that the game for the Xbox 360 will come with two discs with a mandatory 8GB install, the second is that Rockstar have nothing to share regarding the game on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

First we’ll talk about the 2 disc/mandatory install. In a Q&A post on Rockstars website they were asked how many discs the game would come with. First they touched upon the Xbox 360:

“Grand Theft Auto V is the largest and most ambitious game we have yet created, and takes full advantage of every ounce of processing power available in the current generation of consoles. In order to provide the best possible experience for such a massive and detailed world, the game will have installation requirements on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 systems.

For Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs; Disc 1 will be used for a one-time mandatory install and Disc 2 will be used to play the game. After the install, players will be able to enjoy both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online without any need to switch discs.”

As for the PlayStation 3 Rockstar had this to say:

For PlayStation®3, the game ships on one disc and will install content as soon as you insert the game. The install is roughly 8GB, and players will be able to play as soon as the install is complete.

This isn’t anything unusual for the Xbox 360, we’ve become used to larger games coming with one disc with a large portion to install (Forza for example) and a second disc to actually play the game. Thankfully it seems like a painless experience – that is if you have almost 8GB free to install the game on, if not choose a game or two to delete.

In the very same Q&A Rockstar was asked whether the game will be coming to PC or next generation consoles such as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4:

The only versions of the game that we have announced are for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 which are set for a September 17th worldwide release. We don’t have anything to share about the possibility of a next-gen or a PC platform release at this time and we are completely focused on delivering the best possible experience for the consoles people have right now.

So there you have it, it’s not a “no” but at the same time it’s not a “yes”. I could hazard a guess and say that a PC and next-gen release may be on the table at a later date – 2014 maybe? But for now we can only expect GTA V on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Those of you who have the consoles to play the game on, are you excited? We’ve only got around two months to wait until the games release! Whut Whut!!
