Report: Rumoured plastic cover iPhone uncovered. The heavily rumoured “budget” iPhone that’s supposedly going to have a more cheaper plastic body has been the hot topic recently with various bits of information leaking all over the place. Yesterday we saw the rumoured iPhone 5C ‘leak’ and now China Labour Watch may have all but confirmed the existence of the cheap iPhone.

Yesterday China Labour Watch sent undercover agents into three factories in China which were owned by Apple’s supplier Pegatron in order to asses labour rights violations. With the main focus being on the work environment and the way the workers treated information on the cheap iPhone was thin.

The final report read “(The factory’s) assembled products include iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones,”. Like I said, the information is very thin. There was, however, a diary entry that was written by one of the undercover employees that was pretty interesting:

“Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple.

The task is pretty easy, and I was able to work independently after a five-minute instruction from a veteran employee. It took around a minute to paste protective film on one rear cover. The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important. This makes our job more slow-paced than in departments that have begun mass production schedules.”

So like I mentioned above, they all but confirmed that there’s a “low-priced plastic” iPhone that “has not yet been put into mass production” which may in fact be the iPhone 5C which some are speculating stands for “colour”.

Apple are rumoured to also unveil the iPhone 5S around September/October so we’ll be holding our ears to the ground on this.
