Xiaomi unveil the Red Rice, a low-budget handset for only $130Xiaomi, the guys behind the popular Android ROM MIUI and the extremely popular handset the Xiaomi MI1 and MI2, have announced the Red Rice, a low-budget handset in collaboration with Chinese Internet giant Tencent. Priced at around $130 this is the cheapest handset that Xiaomi have to offer.

Announced on Xiaomi’s Sina Weibo account, in collaboration with Qzone (Tencent and China Mobile’s own social network) the Red Rice phone was unveiled and given the price of RMB799 which is around $130. A release date of August 12 has also been announced with pre-orders and the first batch of 100,000 being made available to Qzone users before anyone else.

It’s specs were also announced too with the Red Rice being home to a 4.7 inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720, a 1.5GHz MT6589T quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM. It runs on Android-based MIUI 5. The Red Rice also features an 8-megapixel rear camera as well as a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. In terms of user memory it comes with 4GB worth of extendable memory. There’s also dual SIM functionality.

Given the phones price and the specs under the hood I can guarantee that this phone is going to sell out – fast. At present there are no plans for a Western release and it’s probably safe to say those plans will probably never manifest – dammit.
