Boxee is a rather small company that’s probably best known for it’s cloud streaming set-top boxes, well, at least that’s what it used to do before Samsung bought the company for around $30 million. Samsung now have plans to kill off Boxee as soon as July 10 – what does that mean for those who use the cloud streaming service?
An official announcement on the Boxee website read:
For Boxee users, we’re working behind the scenes to ensure there’s minimal impact to your devices. However, the beta Cloud DVR functionality we provided to certain Boxee TV users will be discontinued on July 10th. You will not have access to your existing recordings after that date. We realize many of you loved the service, and we’re sorry it won’t be available moving forward.
This is a decision I’m sure frustrates those who make use of the Boxee service but sadly this is usually what happens when a larger company buys out a much smaller one – I’m looking at you Yahoo!
Either way you look at it, Samsung will do some good with the Boxee team whether that’s improving their already awesome AllShare streaming app, or whether they’ll integrate it into their TV’s.
