It seems that Phil Fish has thrown his dummy out of the pram after a “Twitter fight” with GameTrailers “Annoyed Gamer” and cancelled FEZ II. The two collided on Twitter after GameTrailers host Marcus “AnnoyedGamer” Beer called Fish and Braid developer Jonathan Blow out on their reaction to being asked about some gaming news which was specific to indie gamers.
The argument, as petty as it is, began with the news that Microsoft would allow indie developers to self-publish on the Xbox One. At the time it was a rumour but that didn’t stop several publications contacting Fish and Blow about the matter, I mean, they’re two of the main starring characters in “Indie Game: The Movie” and they’ve published two pretty successful indie games on the platform so I’m not wrong in thinking that it’d seem fitting they’d be asked for their opinion, right?
Apparently not. After a few angry Tweets from Fish and Blow, Marcus Beer had some pretty choice words about the indie developers, Fish in particular. Which in turn resulted in Fish lashing out at Beer on Twitter.
TL;DR Fish had a few choice words of his own for Beer, then all out ragequit on Twitter with “im done. FEZ II is canceled. goodbye.”(sic). Which was followed by a Tweet on FEZ II’s developer account Polytron:
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that FEZ II has been cancelled and is no longer in development. We apologize for the disappointment
— Polytron (@Polytron) July 27, 2013
To add insult to injury Joystiq reached out to Fish to which he replied “It’s true,”.
Shortly after an official statement on Polytron’s blog posted by Fish appeared which reads:
FEZ II is cancelled.
i am done.
i take the money and i run.
this is as much as i can stomach.
this is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign.
So it appears that Phil Fish has not only cancelled FEZ II but has also left the gaming industry as a whole. Your thoughts? Leave a comment below!
