Vice President of Android Hugo Barra has just confirmed that he is in fact leaving Google in favour of my favourite Chinese ROM and Smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi. In his Google+ post he writes that he’ll be filling the position of Vice President, Xiaomi Global which, he explains is “to help them expand their incredible product portfolio and business globally”.
Also in his post he wishes the best to his ex-Google colleagues calling out Andy Rubin, Hiroshi Lockheimer, Sundar Pichai, and Vic Gundotra. In terms of filling his position no comment has been made but it’s unlikely that Andy Rubin will return to the devision, and Sundar Pichai has enough on his plate.
The good news to take from this is that Xiaomi the team behind the MIUI ROM as well as the range of Xiaomi Mi phones and the recently released Red Rice, an the rumoured Purple Rice tablet, have only really released their handsets in China. This new position that Barra has taken on means that Xiaomi may start manufacturing or at least releasing their phones elsewhere, something which I’ve been hoping for for a very very long time.
