Tonight Activision and Infinity Ward lifted the lid on the multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: Ghosts and oh boy it looks awesome. Not only do we have the usual fast paced action, we’ve also got dynamic maps, brand new multiplayer gamemodes, and finally sustomisable soldiers and squads and that’s what I’m going to focus on here.
We pretty much jumped straight into the multiplayer game play this evening and we immediately had some fantastic new features thrown at us such as the character customisation. The character customisation gives us over 20,000 different character combinations that are not only cosmetic things like head, body type, gender, but they effect the way we play. For the first time ever there’s also the option to choose and play as a female character – that’s almost 10 years of Call of Duty titles and only now there’s the option to play as a female.
There’s also a brand new Create-a-class system which takes the “pick 10” feature allowing you a certain budget for each class you create. This allows you to choose your primary weapon, secondary, grenades and attachments, using this budget, this however doesn’t include your perks or killstreaks. Perks are actually allocated their own set of points with each perk having a set point value ranging from one to five. You have eight points to spend overall but you can actually have up to 11 points if you choose not to have a secondary weapon or grenades.
Killstreaks; Not straying too far from Modern Warfare 3 the The Assault, Support and Specialist Strike Packages return but this time they’ve removed many of the air-based streaks in favour of “in-your-face ground-based” ones instead. Riley the dog makes an appearance as a Kill Streak too! He works similar to the Escort Drone in Black Ops 2 by following you around and killing nearby enemies, he also works as a sort-of UAV by growling whenever an enemy is near.
Character customisation is also taken over to the new Squads feature, this feature allows you to create, customise, and play as several different characters that you create all in one “squad”. These Squads consist of 10 different characters that you can level up however you want. Want a member of your squad who’s primarily a sniper? Sure, he’ll have his own set of unlocks and experience. Fancy a bad ass female complete with LMG skills, sure she’ll be there too. Each member of your squad can prestige once, but unlike the prestige you’re used to you get to keep everything you’ve unlocked. All in all there’s 10 soldiers, with one prestige level per soldier – do the maths, that’s 10 levels of prestige!
So that’s what we know about the customisation system so far, over the next few weeks Call of Duty: Ghosts will be making an appearance at several events – The Eurogamer Expo in London in September will be one of those events – where you’ll be able to get hands-on with the multiplayer mode and experience the character customisation yourself.
