Yesterday Funcom announced LEGO Minifigures Online a brand new free-to-play MMO that’s “primarily geared towards kids”. The game will features expansive worlds based on the LEGO Minifigure brand of toys. The game is scheduled to come some time in the second quarter of 2014 for Windows PC, iOS and Android.
The game is most likely a replacement for the now closed down LEGO Universe MMO which was launched by LEGO and sadly failed to make any money from it’s target market. LEGO Minifigures Online is an action filled multiplayer experience where players can get lost in amongst the Pirate World, or the Space World, and even the Medieval World if they so choose. Though it’s aimed at kids, I’m 90% sure that I’ll be playing this.
The game is said to have around 100 unique characters available for you to collect with the ability to switch between three playable characters at any time. Each character has its own unique and powerful abilities too. Talking of collecting characters, because this game is based on the LEGO Minifigure toy line, there will be a new series of Minifigures available to purchase that each come with a code that allows you to play with the toy in the LEGO Minifigure Online world. How cool is that?
“We could not be more excited to be working with LEGO on such a great franchise. I think you could even say the team has been training to make this game since we were little kids,” says Lawrence Poe, Executive Producer on ‘LEGO Minifigures Online’. “That excitement carries over into everything we do, and we’re throwing every ounce of our passion and creativity into the game. We are one hundred percent focused on delivering the fun, safe, quality experience that people expect when they think of LEGO minifigures.”
Because LEGO Minifigures Online is aimed primarily at kids, Funcom is working alongside LEGO’s child-safety processes to protect children using the game’s chat and friending systems.
