The Sony Xperia Z when it first was released was a phone that really grabbed my attention, it looked good both on paper and in appearance. So when I got the chance to take a look at one and see how it performed I jumped at the chance. Sadly though this is a tale that doesn’t have a happy ending…
I think I should specify that I currently have an iPhone 5, this review isn’t meant to be a comparison between the two but in my opinion you will always compare two things. Even if you don’t want to. It’s just the way we are.
So shall we begin?
The Sony Xperia Z is one thing. Big! And it does big well, it handles it’s size well. Everything is proportionate to this large phone. The Sony Xperia Z really is a gorgeous phone, straight out the box even with the screen black and doing nothing you can tell it’s going to look amazing (That might not make sense, but if you get that feeling, you’ll know what I mean). The Xperia Z boasts a five inch screen aswell as a 13 megapixel camera to view you snaps but that’s sadly where I found the first downfall – The camera. I’m no expert, I don’t claim to be but I’ve take enough photos in my time to know which ones look good, and which ones look bad. I always think higher the megapixel, better the picture. With the Xperia Z I wasn’t all that impressed, Sony have said that this camera will take stunning pictures in low-light as well as strongly back lit areas. I wasn’t so sure about that. To me I just felt that the Xperia Z didn’t take a good photo and that the video was much the same, I may of expected more from it but is that wrong when Sony speak so highly of its camera capabilities.
It isn’t all doom and gloom for the Xperia Z. One of it’s most astonishing features, especially with a smart phone that we normally consider very delicate is it’s ability to swim. Kind of. The phone is specifically designed to be water resistant, dust resistant and has tough glass that has an anti-shatter film over that! It’s features like this that help the Xperia Z out, that make it stand out in a sea of smartphones (mainly because the Xperia Z could survive in the sea, unlike any other smartphone). People want sleek design combined with durability and the Sony Xperia Z delivers that.
Another place where the phone let itself down again was with it’s speaker. You have 5 inches of viewing pleasure in the palm of your hands and you want to browse YouTube for a funny video of a cat barking but you just don’t want to use your headphones, that’s what the speaker is there for. For when you don’t want to use headphones. But with the Xperia Z it’s best if you use the headphones because the speaker on the phone is terrible. It’s not loud and the quality of it is just shocking – it sounds like you’ve cleaned out a tin of baked beans and rested your phone in it. Basically it’s very ‘tinny’, that’s what I’m trying to say.
One area that I had mixed feeling on was the display, and now that I’ve had time to reflect I can say that overall the display on the phone pretty good. But in my opinion that’s only if you have the brightness up all the way to enjoy the sharp, vivid colours. Now, here is the problem with full brightness you sacrifice battery life, so what do you do? Well luckily the Xperia Z comes with battery management, that allows you to enjoy the features of the phone but with enough battery to make that last text before your phone dies (we’ve all been there)
The Xperia Z is only 146 grams and sits pretty in your hand at 139 x 71 x 7.9mm. It runs on Google Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) which took a bit of getting used to, but the phone ran really well.
I think overall this phone isn’t for me, it may be the perfect phone for you. We’re all different in what we like, what works for us. I was excited to get my hands on this phone, and at the beginning of it all I went at the phone like any other person – eager, not someone trying to just review it. I wanted to use this phone like I would of used my own (mainly taking silly pictures of my dog and doing stupid things on Vine). If you think this could be the phone for you, then why not head over to Dialaphone who kindly supplied us with this sleek piece of kit. They also have amazing deals on the Sony Xperia Z as well as many other phones.
