Google’s Sundar Pichai Confirms the Next Version of Android to be Named “KitKat”.

It’s well known that Android name their operating systems after tasty sweet treats, it’s also been known that the next version of Android will be called Key Lime Pie, but that’s not the case anymore now Google’s head of both Android and Chrome, Sundar Pichai, has confirmed that the next version of Android will be named after the tasty chocolate bar from Nestlé – KitKat.

That’s right, the next version of Android will be named KitKat and will in fact be Android 4.4 not the 4.5 we’ve all been expecting. A splash page has also been launched for the new operating system which goes through every version of Android starting at Android Cupcake (1.5) all the way through to KitKat (4.4) which has a brief description:

“It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”

That doesn’t mean that we were wrong about Key Lime Pie. Internally it has always been known as the zesty cheesecake, but opted for a new name because “very few people actually know the taste of a key lime pie,”. In terms of licencing, Android did reach out to Nestlé for use of the KitKat name and within 24 hours sealed the deal – which has been confirmed as “not a money-changing-hands kind of deal,” John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, told the BBC.

To celebrate the partnership with KitKat and Android, Nestlé are also doing an Android themed promotion where you can win a Nexus 7 or Google Play Store credit from promotional KitKat bars. Yum!

To fully seal the deal however, Google have added a new statue to the lawn of Google HQ:

If this were made of real chocolate, I’d be in heaven.
