Spotify Announces ‘Connect’ Allowing you to Stream to Any Device.

Spotify is now allowing you to stream your music from more things that just the device you use to listen to it with something called Spotify Connect, this feature now syncs what you’re listening to, to the cloud and allows you to switch between your phone/tablet, to compatible wireless speakers in an instant without interrupting the music you’re listening to.

Right now the iOS app should have received the update allowing you to select a small speaker in the top right of the music navigation bar and when synced with compatible Spotify speakers, will allow you to seamlessly switch from your personal headphones, to your living room sound system, or bathroom speakers, providing you’ve got that many wireless doodads dotted about your house like those in the video above. Once done successfully the Spotify app then becomes the controller of that music, similar to when you sync your device with bluetooth speakers.

Currently Spotify have got Argon, Bang & Olufsen, Denon, Hama, Marantz, Philips, Pioneer, Revo, Teufel and Yamaha, on board with Spotify Connect with more brands getting added before the end of the year.

Spotify Connect isn’t exactly a revolutionary idea, we’ve been able to connect with Bluetooth speakers for some time now with our devices becoming the controller. The main point of this feature though is that Spotify is going to become a part of these brands, almost ubiquitous to the stereo system like back in the day when stereo systems used to come with cassette players and radios as standard – or I guess, the same as Aux inputs and iPod Docks have become today.

It’ll be interesting if Spotify can wipe out the iPod Dock in favour of the Spotify Connect feature, but I’m sure it’ll be some time before a subscription based music player becomes preferred over iPods and CD’s.
