Ah the Super Nintendo, who does love this game console? well, maybe if you were a SEGA fan boy you won’t, but still if you did own a SNES I have no doubt that you owned this title as it was one of the launch title for the system. This has to be one of my favourite games for the this game console as it was one of the first games that I played when I was a child. So let’s dive into one of the best Mario games of the 90’s.
I think if you have ever played a Mario title you already know the story. As usual Princess Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser the only difference is this time it’s in a land with dinosaurs. This is the first time that we meet our green, red, purple, yellow or whatever colour friend, Yoshi. He acts like your mount in this game and when you jump on him and ride him the musical score changes to fit the fact that you are using Yoshi, it’s a subtle but exquisite touch.
For a game that was released in the early 90’s it looks beautiful, with it’s vibrant colours and it’s vast array of different areas it feels like the name suggests, a world. Like most of the Mario games there is always a big emphasis on secrets and oh boy are there a lot of them in this one, probably the most notorious one is the star road map and the special stages which are balls to the wall hard.
That’s what I love about this game is exploring its nooks and crannies trying to find that alternative path to unlock its secrets. The overworld in this game is one of my favourites because it’s so bright and colourful and the areas get vastly different the further you progress in the game, my most beloved part of the map is the Forest of Illusion because it’s what the name suggests with its many secrets and that soundtrack to that part of the world gives you that sense of being lost and alone.
This game plays like your standard Mario adventure with the running, jumping, and swimming but there are new power ups such as the feather that gives a yellow cape which is a ton of fun to fly through the air. With Yoshi he can eat apples and after a while he can lay eggs and give you One Up’s or Power Up’s such as Fire Flowers or Mushrooms, but he can gain powers for himself by eating different coloured Koopa Troopers. The red shell makes him spit fire balls out, the blue shell grants him wings temporarily, yellow shell lets him cause an earthquake every time he jumps and green shell he just spits back out.
If you haven’t played this Mario game I would suggest it because it is a fantastic adventure and it will keep you occupied for a while. You can easily pick it up these days on the Wii Virtual Console or the Wii U Virtual Console, so go buy it now I strongly recommend it.
