Rumours suggested that today’s Apple Keynote will be revealing not one, but two new iPhones, the one we all expected was the iPhone 5S, we’ve expected an “S” variant ever since the iPhone 3GS, but rumours also pointed at a “cheaper” version of the iPhone 5 with the name iPhone 5C. Today, this is the phone Apple revealed first.

iphone 5CThe iPhone 5C is more-or-less spot on to the past rumours. It’s housed in a plastic polycarbonate unibody that’s reinforced by a steel plate which doubles up as the antenna. It comes in five colours; White, Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. Phil Shiller who announced the iPhone 5C “won’t see seams, or part lines, or joins,” and it’s true, it’s a very clean looking iPhone.

Instead of making the iPhone 5 cheaper like they’ve done with previous models Apple have opted to completely discontinue the iPhone 5 and replace it with the iPhone 5C. This phone is essentially the iPhone 5 but completely re-imagined, perhaps the “C” stands for “copy”? Like the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5C has a 4-inch Retina display and the same A6 processor. It’ll also be home to the same 8-megapixel rear camera, but the 5C has an improved FaceTime HD camera at the front.

In terms of cost the iPhone 5C is also a lot cheaper than previous models with a 16GB iPhone 5C it’ll set you back $99, and a 32GB version is priced at $199 – this includes a two year contract. Pre-orders for the iPhone 5C will begin on September 13th, and the device will be made available in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and the UK on September 20th.

UK Pricing is yet to be determined but keep a sharp eye on this post for more information.
