Tesco Take on the Tablet Market with the Hudl

Yesterday UK supermarket chain, Tesco have just launched their own 7-inch “HD” tablet called Hudl in an attempt to take on the likes of Amazon and Google with a focus on “accessibility and convenience”.

I was pretty surprised to read that Tesco had gone ahead and launched their own tablet but taking a closer look at the new multicoloured slate, all isn’t as bad as it seems. From the off it comes in a series of different colours; red, blue, black, and purple. The Hudl is home to a 7-inch HD display with 243 pixels per inch. Under the hood it runs a Rokchip 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 16GB memory which has support for a MicroSD card upto 32GB. According to Tesco, the Hudl has a battery that’ll last around 9 hours on a full charge.

It runs on the Android Jellybean 4.2.2 operating system, which from the looks of it is almost vanilla Android and it also will feature Google Play which will allow those who already have a Google device to download apps they’ve already purchased. As far as I can see there’s no overly obvious Tesco branding anywhere other than a small “[T]” in the bottom left corner which is great too. The best thing about the Hudl is that it’ll be going on sale for £119. That, hands down beats the likes of the Amazon Kindle HD and the Google Nexus 7.

Tesco has designed the device so to ensure that when customers switch on the Hudl for the very first time, users receive a screen allowing parents to turn off certain features if the tablet can be used by children. Speaking of which, Tesco have also launched a line of Hudl branded accessories for the device such as a pair of headphones and a rubber case which makes slate more child-friendly.

Tesco Chief Executive, Philip Clarke, comments:

Hudl is a colourful, accessible tablet for the whole family to enjoy. The first stage in our tablet offering, it’s convenient, integrated and easy to use with no compromise on spec. Customers are quite rightly very discerning about the technology they buy so we knew we had to be competitive on all fronts.”

The Hudl is set to go on sale in around 1000 Tesco stores and online from 30th September priced at £119. For those of you who get Tesco Clubcard vouchers the Hudl will be available on Clubcard Boost giving you the chance to double your vouchers and get the Hudl for under £100.
