Mangaverse spiderman

Yes I’m in one of those moods again. Some people see the relationship of Western comics and Manga as something like coleslaw and ice cream. Wrong. Me on the other hand. I see it more like coleslaw and a burger. Something I and a few people like, but I can understand why it’s not for everyone. I think this metaphor describes the response and obscurity of the Marvel Mangaverse project.

Back in the early 2000’s Marvel released a series of comics which re-imagined the likes of the Fantastic Four, X-men and The Avengers in a manga setting. So imagine the Avengers piloting a huge Megazord style robot and the Fantastic Four fighting Godzilla style monsters.

Now onto Marvels golden boy. Spider-man. Peter Parker was re-imagined as the rookie student of the Spider-clan an almost extinct clan of ninjas, his sensei was Uncle Ben. Peter suffers a serious loss when Ben is murdered by Venom, an evil Ronin and son of Uncle Ben.

Because of this Aunt May forbids Peter from training any further. Peter decides he must avenge his uncle and keep on training. He dons a costume and uses the variety of ninja equipment available to him to web sling.

It’s not long before Peter encounters Venom who reveals his connection to uncle Ben and unleashes an number of re-imagined Spider-man villains on Peter who are in the command of a sumo style Kingpin. Peter defeats the hired goons and confronts Venom but as Peter hovers on the edge of defeating Venom, down below Mary Jane and members of his high school class are put into danger.

Peter choose to save his class members and accept that with great power comes great responsibility. This is when Venom kills Kingpin and takes of his criminal empire.

Here’s a couple of cool “oh that’s clever how they worked that in” facts.

  • Peter trains Mary Jane to be a ninja and she becomes Spider-woman.
  • Matt Murdock (Daredevil) is a hunter of demonic beings and is called the Devil Hunter.
  • Doctor Octopus is a high school science teacher with an obsession with obedience and octopuses.
  • And it also turns out that Peter spider-sense is another sensory skills passed down throughout the Spider-clan.
