Valve this evening finally lifted the lid on the Steam Box! Well, sort of. It’s actually called the Steam Machine and it’s more of a prototype than a fully fledged console. But we don’t care right? The Steam Machine exists!
Valve’s Steam Machines, yes, Machines, are going to be a series of consoles which run the earlier announced Steam OS. Valve are working with “multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014”. Details of who these partners are and what specs the machines will contain is currently under wraps. What we do know is that it’s possibly going to be a modular style console which Valve say is “upgradable and open.”
Now, the best news Valve have 300 prototypes to give away to you, the user, completely free of charge, so you can test them out. The reason for this is because Valve believe that ” the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as [they] go.”
So how do you get considered to the Beta, how exactly do we get our greasy little paws on a prototype Steam Machine? Simple, we must comple the Eligibility Quest on Steam. To complete the quest you must do the following:
- Join the Steam Universe community group.
- Agree to the Steam Hardware Beta Terms and Conditions.
- Make 10 Steam friends (if you haven’t already).
- Create a public Steam Community profile (if you haven’t already).
- Play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode.
Steps can be completed in any order and once completed you’ll receive a “special badge” and thrown into the pool amongst everyone else who’s completed the quest and on October 25th, the list will be locked. So complete the quest before then!
Valve have set up a brief Q&A offering answers to some questions people may have which you can find in the source link below.
So what do you think? I’m pretty excited to see what the Steam Machine will look like, what hardware it’ll contain, and how well the SteamOS runs on a dedicated piece of kit. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
