It was inevitable really. Since Facebook acquired the photo and now video sharing service, Instagram, it seemed more than likely that at some point it’ll start showing adverts and low and behold Instagram earlier this week officially announced that it’ll slowly start rolling out photo and video ads over the coming months.
Similar to Twitter’s sponsored tweets, Instagram’s adverts will be native to the service meaning brands that you don’t follow will start to appear in your Instagram feed amongst pictures your friends and other people you follow post onto the service.
Instagram will be rolling out ads slowly across the United States and will deliver “a small number of beautiful, high-quality photos and videos from a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community.”
Instagram has always been a free service an now that it’s accumulated over 150 million users it’s no wonder the team want to focus on making the brand more of a business. This news however will most likely be another reason for those too school for cool to jump the Instagram ship, and to those I bid farewell.
