Gaijin Entertainment have announced the release of their latest title, Skydive: Proximity Flight, onto the Playstation Network in Europe this week.
The title is inspired by base jumping, which is an extreme sport in which people a lot braver than me jump from fixed objects and use a parachute to break their fall, it is very similar to skydiving but differs in some technical areas such as jump speed and “terminal velocity”.
Gaijin claim that the aim of the game is to place the player inside a wingsuit for an exhilarating skydiving experience, this effect is supposedly increased by the use of motion controller technology available to the PS3.
It is not a game strictly for those with Playstation Move controllers however, as manoeuvres can be completed by twisting and turning a Dualshock 3 controller.
There are four different game modes in Skydive: Proximity Flight, these are Adrenaline Race, Routes, Tricks and Freestyle.
Adrenaline Race pits you against computer rivals or your friends to try and get the fastest time through a course, performing tricks will fill an adrenaline bar, which can be used to increase speed or rewind time to adjust trajectory when full.
In Proximity Flight players must fly through increasingly difficult routes, which are marked out by glowing rings.
Tricks mode is a pretty standard mode where players must execute aerial manoeuvres, which increase in difficulty as the game goes on.
Freestyle mode puts the player in control, allowing them to jump off any location and create their own routes and incorporate a variety of tricks. The route you fly can then be created and shared with the wider community, to challenge others and see if other players can repeat the flight you created.
Gaijin have tried to build a realistic base jumping simulation with this game, to try and ensure this they had base jumping athletes Jokke Sommer, Andrey Boldyrev and Halvor Angvik play a part in the game as consultants on realism aspects such as speed and manoeuvrability.
Creative Director at Gaijin, Kirill Yudintsev, said “We’re excited to see Skydive: Proximity Flight launch on the PlayStation Network today, and look forward to players jumping in and experiencing the adrenaline rush we’ve got in store for them. Taking a virtual leap in Skydive: Proximity Flight will bring a bird’s eye view of the world straight into your living room!”
The game is available now and can be downloaded from the Playstation Network for EUR19.99.
