It is undeniable that PS Plus’s ‘Instant Game Collection’ was winning over gamers world-wide. Xbox, to the dismay of many however, was denying rumors that their competing ‘Games with Gold’ initiative would be coming to Xbox One.
Until recently, when Microsoft’s ‘Mr. Xbox’ Larry Hyrb shot out a tweet confirming those rumors, making Xbox gamers squeak with joy (including myself).
Great news: Access to free games each month is coming for Xbox Live Gold members on #XboxOne – Details coming later in 2014 — Larry Hryb (@majornelson) November 14, 2013
The growing-in-popularity Games with Gold program gave Xbox Live Gold gamers a free game twice a month on Xbox 360, no strings attached. Especially with the recent release of Halo 3, it seemed Microsoft was taking this program seriously, presumably in order to stay in competition with the previously maligned PSN and PS Plus. We can now all but confirm the commitment from Microsoft with the program’s return on Xbox One.
We have yet to get any details over what games will be released, when the program will officially start, etc. and don’t expect those details for a couple of months. It is unfortunate not to have the feature at launch, but you wont find many complaining over the wait.
Where does this leave gamers? In a very good spot, as the competition between the two gaming powerhouses will only continue to benefit us as a community.
