It has been revealed that the ability to gift games to friends on Xbox One may come after the launch of Microsoft’s flagship games console, as “Major Nelson” took part in a Q&A session on Reddit.
A user asked the question ‘can I buy a game and gift it to a friend digitally?’ to which Major Nelson responded: “Great feature we’d like to add someday, but it won’t be there at launch.”
Sharing of a digital library of games for Xbox One has been something that has been hinted previously, with a “Family Sharing” feature being removed in one of the console’s many policy u-turns.
This feature would have given players the ability to share a game library with family members, which seems like it would be a more promising policy than the game gifting that was mentioned here, as the “gift” aspect suggests that access to the title would not be shared.
Of course at the moment there is no confirmation that this policy will be implemented, Major Nelson simply said they would like to add it in someday, there was no confirmation they were actually working on anything of the sort.
It does appear that Microsoft wish to make the Xbox One experience an increasingly digital one, and digital game gifting would be a logical extension of this policy, time will tell whether anything more concrete comes out of the slight suggestion that was dropped by Major Nelson here.
The Xbox One is due for release on November 22.
