I sense a disturbance in the bad pun side of the force as this week instead of capes and masks were flinging around lightsabers and hiding beneath cloaks. As we take a look at the history of the comic-book Darth Maul.

The Star Wars expanded universe, which is a mix of books, comics, and games produces a Tales of the Star Wars brand. It’s past, it’s present and it’s future. Originally the comics were published by Marvel until 1991 then Dark Horse comics took over, however Marvel will take over again in 2015.

Chewie’s dead and Luke had an evil clone called Luuke. But let me tell you more about Maul. Darth Maul that is, the mystery Sith from Episode 1.

Darth Maul is a member of the alien race the Zabrak and was born on the planet Iridonia. Maul was inducted in the ways of the dark side by Darth Sidious (AKA the Emperor) who punished any sign of fear and mercy shown by the child which was met with cruelty from his master.

By the time Maul was a teen he had covered his entire body in Sith tattoos. Maul training twisted him into having respectful feelings towards his master and giving worthy opponents a quick death.

Maul’s trademark double bladed lightsaber was inspired by the designs given to him by his master and by a Zhaboka (a weapon native to his home planet) to defeat a Jedi Master called Siolo’urmanka. In one final test Darth Sidious stranded Maul on a isolated rim in the dangerous Outer Rim system, leaving him for a month with his only company being the Assassin Droids.

Sidious returned and challenged his worn apprentice to a battle, Maul was quickly defeated by Sidious who claimed the whole time he’d been training an apprentice to replace him. An angered Maul bit his master on the hand spitting his blood in his face, Maul accepts he can never beat his master and prepares for death.

Sidious strikes him with a weak training lightsaber merely laughing revealing that it had been a test all the time and by Maul wanting to kill him, he had passed.

There hadn’t been another apprentice, just a weird twisted rite of passage so Maul could become a Sith. Maul then served in various missions and eventually popped up in Episode 1 and became half the man he used to be..
