The lucky folks at Edge had a chat with Aaron Garbut (Art Director, GTA V) and the glorious results of their conversation can now be found online. The article gives you a great insight into the inner workings of Rockstar and the game industry generally, but I’m particularly hyped about what he has to say about GTA Online:
“What I love about our GTA Online plans is that the game is no longer static. We can continue to add these things and evolve. That’s even more exciting these days, where through forums, Reddit, etc, we have a real direct connection to the people playing the game. We can respond to what they are into and what they hate more than ever. It’s something that really suits the way we work, the way we’re always trying to adapt the experience and avoid walking blindly down a set path.”
What’s that? “The game is no longer static […] we can respond to what they are into” and “adapt the experience”? Sounds like Rockstar can’t keep their hands off their precious GTA V… and as for the things Rockstar intend to ‘add’? Well, Garbut spends a good amount of time discussing how a lot of material was cut during development; “I don’t feel like the game fell short, but there is undoubtedly a huge volume of plans and ideas that we wanted to do to push it further” which lies interestingly close to, “what I love about our GTA Online plans is that the game is no longer static. We can continue to add these things and evolve.” Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge?
Also, in the interview Garbut emphasises the open-minded work-ethic of the Rockstar team and how they were keen to avoid getting ‘locked down to anything, whether […] a process, a plan, a goal, an asset, an idea – anything’. He uses the words ‘adapting’ and ‘evolving’ many-a-time, and that ‘having multiple characters was a leap of faith’. Considering how the faith-leaping has gone so far, GTA Online would make a great platform for further game gambling, don’t you think?
We’ll be keeping our eyes firmly on future developments from the Rockstar team. I’m hoping they’ll introduce mythical creatures into Los Santos…
