The biggest consumer tech show, CES, has barely even started and the torrent of announcements and unveilings is already pretty overwhelming! With that being said, there has also been some pretty amazing announcements, the first of which was Nvidia with their new mobile chip the Tegra K1, a powerful 192-core “super chip”.
Said to bring the DNA of the fastest GPU to mobile the Nvidia Tegra K1 is the next level in mobile processing. The Tegra K1 is the first mobile chip to feature NVIDIA Kepler architecture which beings it on par with one of Nvidia’s fastest graphics cards, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti, which will bring next-generation PC gaming power to mobile devices.
The Tegra K1 is being offered in two ‘pin-to-pin’ compatible versions; a 32-bit quad-core (4-Plus-1 ARM Cortex-A15 CPU) and a custom, NVIDIA-designed 64-bit dual Super Core CPU with both versions delivering stunning graphics and visual computing capabilities powered by the 192-core NVIDIA Kepler GPU.
“Over the past two decades, NVIDIA invented the GPU and has developed more graphics technologies than any other company,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder and CEO, NVIDIA. “With Tegra K1, we’re bringing that heritage to mobile. It bridges the gap for developers, who can now build next-gen games and apps that will run on any device.”
If all that tech mumbo jumbo went straight over your head, let’s put things into perspective on how the Tegra K1 could perform on future mobile devices:
- The Tegra K1 has full support for the latest PC-class gaming technologies – including DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.4 and tessellation – enabling it to run the world’s most advanced game engine, Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, Nvidia has released a tech demo of Unreal 4 on the K1 which you can see above.
- The Tegra K1 also offers the same graphics features as next-gen gaming consoles (Xbox One, PS4) and faster performance vs. current gen consoles (Xbox 360, PS3)
- The Tegra K1 boasts “advanced computation capabilities” and support for Nvidia CUDA ultimately offering better graphics, advanced imaging, speech recognition, video editing and more.
- The Tegra K1 is more energy efficient which means more power without sacrificing battery life. According to the press release the Tegra K1 is 1.5 times more power efficient than competing mobile chips such as Qualcomm’s S800 and Apple’s A7.
So when can we expect devices to be packed with Nvidia’s latest tech? According to the official press release Nvidia hope to see devices with the Tegra K1 (32-bit chip) as early as the first half of 2014, as for the more powerful 64-bit version is expected nearer the end of 2014.
The future of mobile and mobile gaming is looking pretty exciting, who knows, perhaps in 2015 we’ll be able to purchase games like Call of Duty: Ghosts II on mobile as well as Xbox One and PlayStation 4..
