Amazon has recently confirmed that they’ve acquired Double Helix Games, the developers behind the Xbox One exclusive title, and also classing reboot, Killer Instinct, if that doesn’t scream “Amazon Games Console” then I don’t know what does..
The news of the acquisition first came to light when both Amazon and Double Helix Games sent out invitations to a joint recruiting event which is taking place in L.A. on February 13. Amazon have since confirmed the acquisition, though no details of the transaction have been revealed.
In a statement to TechCrunch Amazon said: “Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers.” Not exactly the most revealing statement, but it’s a confirmation nonetheless.
As for Double Helix Games’ work on Killer Instinct, according to OXM the developers will stop working on the title and hand development over to another developer, it also seems that their work on the upcoming Capcom title, Strider, will also stop. Microsoft haven’t yet announced who’ll be taking the reigns, but I’m sure it’ll be announced soon.
Rumours surrounding Amazon and their ventures into developing a video games console have been surfacing all over the place and though the company always refuse to comment, it’s seeming more likely that this may be happening sooner than we think.
