After months of speculation, the setting of the next Assassin’s Creed game has finally been revealed. Assassin’s Creed Unity will be taking place in late 18th Century France and as the reveal trailer showed of a guillotine it will most likely revolve around the events of the French Revolution.
Here at n3rdabl3 we have locked one of our resident history buffs in a room (me) until I spoke about the events I want to see in the game.
We don’t know much about the game itself but the main character is apparently going to be called Arno which is old German for ‘eagle-wolf’, so this is how we will be referring to him through out the article.
The French Revolution is a particulrly bloody part of history which took place between 1789 and 1799. By the time it was over the French Monarchy had been abolished by the National Convention of France, a dictatorship had risen and fallen, a new republic had been set up and the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte resulted in a coup and Bonaparte becoming the Emperor of France.
Like a number of other large conflicts, one of the major causes of the civil unrest was economic troubles. Years of bad harvests along with the loss of the Seven Year’s War as well as taking part in The American Revolutionary War had triggered a financial crisis in France leading to Resentment of the privileged and royal family.
The Revolution can be simplified into three major periods. The Jacobin Republic also known as The Terror, The Thermidorian Regime and The Directory. The Terror would make an interesting setting to explore with the Committee of General Security trying those that had been arrested.
The French involvement in The American Revolutionary War could be a good starting point for the game. Linking it in to the previous games by having Arno as a young member of the French army taking part in the conflict before meeting Connor or another member of his Order.
This could also tie in to the rumoured setting of the currently unannounced Assassin’s Creed Comet and put Arno in conflict with Shay, the rumoured main character and member of the Templar Order. Arno could stay in America to become a member of the Assassin’s order before returning to France at the beginning of the chaos to build his own Order.
With the fires of chaos already being fuelled by the economic crisis insiders within the court of King Louis XVI helped to fan the flames by undermining the King and thawing him within parliament. When Louis XVI finally tried to enact reforms he was undermined by the released of false or over the top information which turn public opinion against him and the government.
These insiders would make for great villains for the game and give a collection of targets to eliminate. Having Templars be part of all three parts major parts of the revolution could lead to a complex conspiracy with the Order playing both sides against each other. The Templars could be high ranking members of the dictatorship as well as the new republic and later on, Napoleon.
Maximilien de Robespierre is one of the best known members of the revolution and eventually became the dictator of France. Robespierre will very likely appear with the game and would make for an excellent Grand Master of the Templars in France.
Near the end of his reign Robespierre started making speeches alluding to a conspiracy against the revolution being lead by members of the Convention. After an assassination attempt he also passed a law allowing executions to take place for suspension of being an anti revolutionary. This could be turned in to a story where cracks are forming within the Templar order and Robespierre being overthrown as Grand Master.
Robespierre’s downfall, arrest, and execution is know as The White Terror and took place during the Thermidorian Regime. Robespierre and the other members of the dictatorship that had ruled the country were rounded up and executed. Arno could be mistaken or set up as a member of the former regime which could lead to Arno having to flee for his life through the streets of Paris or Arno could help take down Robespierre.
Trying to protect a monarch may not exactly fit within what we know of the Assassin’s Order, who wish for all men to live free but Arno could try and stop the execution of King Louis XVI. Arno could also work with members of the mobs and the other rising powers. As the politics change Arno could be forced to turn against former friends in order to serve The Order.
Having King Louis XVI as a major character would also be quite interesting, he was well known for being a push over and backing down when faced with opposition. The King could be one of the first targets set for Arno to take out, infiltrating the Palace at Versailles before finding the King who is just being used by people around him. Having Arno as a strong character and bullying the King in to doing what he feels need to be done would give a different feel to other major leaders we have met in previous games.
The execution of King Louis in 1793 would be another great setting for a mission. We have already seen the guillotine in the quick announcement trailer that has been released, attempting to rescue the King before he is beheaded would be great.
During the later parts of the game Napoleon could be introduced or even left for a second game featuring Arno. Napoleon rose to power during the later years of the French Revolution before rising to power during the Coup of 18 Brumaire which is seen by most as the official end of the Revolution.
Napoleon ruled on and off until 1815 when he demanded Asylum from a British Captain and was exiled to Saint Helena. How Arno interacts with Napoleon could change over the game. Helping him during the end of the revolution, before accidentally helping him gain power during the coup, this could also set up a second game focusing Napoleon’s rule.
Napoleon is still seen as one of the greatest military leaders ever so getting to see him in action would be amazing. He is also described as being able to gain the attention of anyone he was in a room with, this could be used as a set up for one of the Piece of Eden being used by him.
The game could also take some ideas from fiction, The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Emma Orczy followed the adventures of Sir Percy Blakeney during The Terror as he rescues people sentenced to die by the guillotine. Having Arno take on this role could offer rescue side missions and trying to get the would-be victim across the channel to England would give a good reason to bring back the water combat from Assassin’s Creed Black Flag.
