Games that allow you to reprogramme your environment seem to be all the rage lately. I say lately, you could probably trace the beginnings of ‘reprogramming’ back to games like Red Faction (the destructible environments allowing players to alter their environment thereby providing them with alternative routes through the terrain), or Narbacular Drop (navigating the environment by using portals – breaking the rules of the landscape so as to complete puzzles) but nowadays reprogramming in games is more than just dropping a portal or blowing open a door.

In Glitchspace, players are tasked to find Glitchspace; ‘a by-product of cyberspace and it’s various glitches. A world that would allow for infinite possibilities, and access across all systems in cyberspace through exploitation’. It’s a puzzle game, so players must use their problem solving abilities to navigate through various in-game challenges.

Like Blendo Games’ not yet released Quadrilateral Cowboy, in Glitchspace players must reprogramme the landscape around them in order to progress by altering the composition of certain interactable objects (physical dimensions, behaviour, composition) by using a programming system called Null. However, not all objects are as easily manipulated as others; some objects have default programs that cannot be removed, forcing the player to think within certain constraints in order to move on to the next section, and other objects cannot be fiddled with unless the player has an encrypter.

There’s a real Antichamber/Sanctum visual feel to the game, and I’m really digging the concept behind it. The game has been Greenlit on Steam and is now available on Early Access.
