I’ve never really noticed it before, but Kirby, Nintendo’s adorable pink ball that’s starred in many of this own, and cameoed in many other Nintendo titles, appears to be a lot angrier whenever he comes to the West? But why? is it because of our water? Are we just generally ruder people and that makes Kirby angry? Well Kirby developer, HAL Laboratories, explains why the adorably pink ball looks so pissed.
Following the release of Kirby Triple Deluxe, Kirby developer HAL Laboratories has cared to explain exactly why Kirby looks so happy on his Japanese box art, but looks a damn sight more angrier on his western box art.
“For the Japanese versions we are, at [Kirby series developer] HAL, involved in everything throughout development, including the package design. The most powerful image of Kirby is that cute image, we think that’s the one that appeals to the widest audience,” said Kirby: Triple Deluxe director Shinya Kumazaki. “While it does start cute, we know there is a serious side to Kirby as well, and throughout the gameplay we see more and more of that, and the games themselves have quite a bit of depth. That being said, we recognise that Kirby’s cuteness is his biggest draw in [the Japanese] market.”
So to put it simply, Nintendo make Kirby look meaner in the west because that appeals more to us than if he were looking cute on the packaging. Huh.. funny that.
Kirby Triple Deluxe is available to purchase right now on the Nintendo 3DS.
