The latest Nintendo Direct video has revealed loads of details about Mario Kart 8. After previous Mario Karts have seen you race “underwater and through the skies” Mario Kart 8 will step things up by letting you race along ceilings and walls. While playing you’ll see blue strips on the ground which will activate your anti-gravity and allow you to race on any surface. Anti gravity will see players race up vertically, along walls and up and down a waterfall.
Also on the topic of anti-gravity is the new spin boosting system. While your kart is in anti-gravity mode, hitting other players or certain objects will give you a speed boost.
Mario Kart 8 also allows players to customise their own kart by selecting a body, tyres and glider.
New racers in Mario Kart 8 are the Koopalings; Larry, Roy, Iggy, Lemmy, Morton, Wendy and Ludwig as well as Baby Rosalina and the second metallic racer, Pink Gold Peach bringing the total number of possible racers up to 30.
Mario Kart 8 will also see some new items. The Boomerang Flower gives you three chances to hit another racer when you throw it and it makes its way back to you. Also being introduced is the Piranha Plant, it’ll automatically bite other racers and things like bananas. The Crazy Eight gives racers eight items and the final item is the Super Horn, everything near the racer will be blown away when it’s activated – it even blocks blue shells.
The Nintendo Direct then went on to reveal that bikes are faster than karts on corners, but karts excel on straights. Hopefully that’ll put an end to bikes filling leaderboards as they did on Wii.
Online gameplay for Mario Kart 8 will allow 12 players to play a variety of modes, including Worldwide, Regionals, Friends and Tournaments. Players can now host their own tournaments too. Ghost data will be available to download as well.
Mario Kart TV is being introduced in Mario Kart 8. It allows players to view highlight reels and upload them for other players to view on Mario Kart TV and YouTube.
Mario Kart 8 hits shelves on May the 30th for the Wii U. If you pick it up before July 31st and register it online, you’ll be able to get one of the following games for free; New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD or Wii Party U.
