Tony Zhou has put together an amazing video examining Satoshi Kon‘s (Paprika, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress) idiosyncratic editing style; particularly his heavy use of alternative cuts and graphic matches to jump through time, space, and characters. His interest in (sometimes disorientating) alternative cutting techniques works well with the themes commonly found in his work – of perception, performance, the lines between reality and the imagination, dreams and the subconscious and the male gaze.

Put more lightly, Kon’s films are trippy, philosophical and psychological works that should be mandatory viewing for all. The video above is worth watching. Watch it.
