Seven. Years.

Wow. Judging by how popular Bungie’s Halo 3 was back in 2007 I thought we would have found all the Easter Eggs by now. It’s a monkeys and typewriters thing – though of course there are those out there who are just a little more dedicated, that will put in just a little extra effort, and essentially that’s how this gem of an Easter Egg was found.

Every week, Bungie open up their ‘Bungie Mail Sack’ in which a fan asked whether the developers were surprised at how quickly or how long it took gamers to discover Easter Eggs in their previous games. Bungie responded; ‘Definitely the IWHBY skull in H3. But you cheated. There is one Easter Egg in Halo 3 that I don’t think anyone has found – I stumbled upon it in code a while back. It only happens on a specific day… so good luck.’ Further clues came to fruition. Another question asked a specific developer what his proudest moment was during his time at Bungie. His reply? ‘Showing my wife the Easter Egg I put in the Halo 3 loading screen for her – the one that nobody has found yet.’

Fans knew where to go, though not when to go. They also didn’t know what they had to do when they got there. Youtuber Lord Zedd worked it out though. By changing the date on an Xbox 360 to December 25th and holding back both of the thumb sticks he found that he could zoom out of the virtual Halo ring revealing the ring in it’s entirety. Along the near edge where the pixels gather can be seen the message; ‘Happy Birthday, Lauren!’ Kudos to Lord Zedd, Nowise10, LeGiiTXSLaYeR and those at TeamBeyond for finding it – check the video above for the easter egg in action.

That’s so lovely! Awwww! I guess we can tick off the last of the Easter Eggs for Halo 3, eh? It’s amazing to think that Easter Eggs can be buried so deep for so long, and undoubtedly there must be Easter Eggs in some games that will never be found. I’m not sure if that makes me sad or happy. I guess the intention was to keep them hidden, yet they’re always celebrated when found. I guess it’s good either way!

I’m still amazed that someone waited two hours in the Cloud Bridge level of Braid for the secret cloud to move into the right position WHO DOES THAT!?
