Despite id Software keeping the Doom reveal exclusive to QuakeCon attendees, information about the upcoming Doom title has surfaced. The new game, isn’t actually a new game, and it’s not Doom 4 either, it’s just Doom. Why? Because, it’s a reboot of sorts – just like Wolfenstein: The New Order, I guess?
Though we’re yet to see footage of the game, Polygon, who were in attendance, have reported everything you need to know about the new Doom title. The site reports that Marty Stratton took to the stage and announced that the new game was a “return to the franchise’s roots,” which is why the game has been named, Doom. It’s not a sequel, it’s not a prequel, it’s just Doom.
“As you’ve probably noticed from the teaser, the game is called Doom, not Doom 4, and not something like Enemy Territory: Doom Wars,” Stratton said. The game will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One and will be running on id Tech 6 — or “id Tech 666,” as the development team are calling it. lolz.
Stratton also explained some of the ingredients that went into recreating Doom and revealed some of the things we can expect from the new, but old, title; such as no regenerating health, fast gameplay, ridiculously huge demons, and large, inventive weapons which you’ll also be pleased to know, you can carry all at the same time.
“Doom will begin outside of a UAC research facility on Mars, right at the outset of a demonic invasion. In a live gameplay demonstration, we watched a player walk through the facility, shotgun in hand,” explained Polygon. “The gameplay sequence showed off brutal melee attacks and buckets of gibs — each eliciting a roar of approval from the presentation’s attendees. The player also seemed to have a few mobile maneuvers, like a double jump, to help them survive waves of enemy demons and leap over large gaps.”
Apparently limbs were all the rage too in the demo that was shown, with the player ripping the arm of a nearby corpse and using it to access a previously locked area, there’s also some new melee executions which saw the player stomping on heads, pulling off limbs, and tearing monsters in half. Finally, according to Polygon, a flying demon caught the better of the player, putting him to a bloody end by beating him to death with his own arm – yummy.
The series staple double-barrel shotgun, chainsaw, rocket launcher and rapid-fire plasma rifle have returned to Doom too, which should please those of you who are fans of the series.
Finally it’s been revealed that Multiplayer will be in Doom, and it will be just as fast paced, and likely as bloody as the campaign, but I’m sure we’ll hear more on that nearer the games release, which is still unknown.
