NPD’s report for June is here, and it reveals some not-so-surprising results. Once again Sony is on top as the PlayStation 4 continues to be the best selling console in the US despite the news that Xbox One sales have doubled. Wii U sales are up too no doubt thanks to the release of Mario Kart 8, and finally the Nintendo 3DS had a good month too!
NPD’s monthly reports always shed some light on how the games industry is doing, it’s also Sony’s favourite monthly report as they prepare to jab another flag into the “best selling console in the US” ground. For the past six months the PlaysStation 4 has remained number one, but for how long? Earlier this week Microsoft revealed that since uncoupling the Kinect with the console, Xbox One sales have almost doubled, unfortunately that wasn’t enough to kick Sony off of the top spot last month.
Whilst those two squabble, Nintendo is celebrating that Wii U sales have seen a 233 per cent increase in June, likely because of the release of Mario Kart 8. Nintendo also saw Wii U software sales increase 373 per cent year-on-year. Elsewhere with Nintendo, the 3DS also had a good June with hardware sales increasing by more than 55 per cent compared to May and saw sales of their weird-sim Tomodachi Life sell more than 175,000 copies in the US.
It’ll be interesting to see how this compare to July’s report considering we’re well and truly in the mids of the game drought.
