Both Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric, and Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal for Wii U and 3DS respectively have both finally received release dates, and thankfully it’s not October. It’s a month later in November with Sonic Boom for the 3DS landing on November 11, and Sonic Boom for the Wii U landing a week later on November 18. With both games being developed by separate studios, neither of which are the franchises usual developers, Sonic Team, it’ll be interesting to see how both games are received.
Both titles are re-imaginings of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise introducing new characters, new character designs, and brand new mechanics. The two games are also set to accompany the Sonic Boom TV show which is set to air this October, and will both feature a similar plot involving Sonic and the gang batting against the nefarious schemes of Doctor Eggman / Dr. Robotnik. In the Wii U game (Rise of Lyric) players must stop the evil Lyric from raising his robot army and taking over the world, whereas in the 3DS version (Shattered Crystal) Lyric has captured Amy and must be rescued by Sonic and co.
I managed to get my hands on the Wii U version of Sonic Boom at Nintendo’s post E3 event and though the game stood up well on its own, for a veteran fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, I was a little disappointed as to how far the game strayed away from the games core concepts – you can read more about that here.
Sonic Boom lands on the 3DS on November 11, and Wii U on November 18.
