Activision has released some numbers as to the amount of players who took part in the Destiny Beta that ran through from July 17 to July 28. The Beta was first opened to PlayStation players who had a valid pre-order, it was then opened to Xbox players who had valid pre-orders on July 23, and then the Beta was opened to everyone on July 25. In total Activision saw 4,638,937 grace their presence on Earth’s cosmodrome during the event, and guess what, there were no problems in terms of server issues – as far as I could tell, anyway.
Destiny’s Beta was surprising for me. I’ll admit, I actually lost interest in Destiny thanks to the love Bungie is showing PlayStation and not Xbox – yes, I’m one of those sulky people – but once Destiny opened the game for all, I was actually blown away by how good both the main campaign and the PvP mode was. So much so, that I’m actually considering pre-ordering the game for myself.
“This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date,” said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg, “Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what’s to come. We’re counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th.”
Bungie’s COO Pete Parsons added: “We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta. We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”
Destiny is scheduled to take us to the moon, Mars and Venus on September 9, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Did you take part in the Beta? What did you think? Share your thoughts in the comment box below.
