Following Nintendo’s Digital E3 broadcast last month a surprising new character was announced for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS; Pac-Man. Everyone’s favourite power-pill gobbling yellow blob is one of the few final playable characters announced for the game, and his inclusion is thanks to Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo who wanted the character to make an appearance.
In his column in Weekly Famitsu, series creator Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Nintendo’s Miyamoto wanted Pac-Man in the game as far back as Super Smash Bros. Brawl. “During development of Smash Bros. Brawl, Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo approached me and asked, ‘Can’t we have Pac-Man as a guest character?'” Sakurai recalled. “At the time, imagining the image of Pac-Man and his incomplete pizza shape, I thought to myself, ‘Hmmm… That’s a little too farfetched.'”
Thankfully since then Pac-Man has sprouted arms and legs and has become a bad ass fighter in his own right. He recently appeared in his own video game brawler, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, so now he seems like a much more fitting character than his once flat, faceless, incomplete pizza image.
Sakura explained in his column that coming up with the idea and actually developing and including the idea are two very different beasts to tame, a lot of things needed to be taken into consideration.”How to give the character their own individuality as a fighter and how they’ll move. Should the game system maintain a consistent form or not. What other fighters are there and how will the new character differ in strategy? Does the new idea fit with the original game? Most importantly, is it entertaining?”
Thankfully Pac-Man is still as entertaining as ever since his introduction into arcades in the 1980’s, and is now a fully playable character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. title.
