Taking a leaf out of every MOBA’s book, Fable Legends is officially going to be free-to-play. Fable Legends is Lionhead’s first foray into the world of free-to-play games, a hurdle that many developers have fallen at. With Fable Legends though, it appears they’ve taken an approach insanely similar to League of Legends – and that’s not a bad thing!
So what does this mean for the player? Well for starters, you’ll get a free game with four playable heroes at launch. After two weeks, four different heroes will be selected and dropped into rotation, replacing the original four. You can use real money or an in-game currency (silver) to buy heroes to make the playable whenever, or you can enjoy the randomized selection. Your progress in each hero is saved regardless of whether you own them or not.
If you prefer to indulge your evil inner self and play the villain, you can purchase creatures in a similar fashion to purchasing heroes. Each quest you play as a villain has specific creatures available in it. If you want to change it up and use creatures from other quests, you’ll have to purchase them. Traps, gates and standing stones are also available for purchase.
Each quest has a handful of chests dotted around that, when opened, give you access to a multitude of rewards including weapons, augments, armour, items, potions and silver. These chests come in three tiers and can also be purchased in the game’s town.
Fable Legends is going for an episodic Telltale-style method of telling the game’s story, with more heroes, creatures and arch villains becoming available as the plot progresses. Currently 10 heroes have been announced, but Lionhead plans to add a lot more.
