Gearbox has revealed that Borderlands 2 has now hit the 12 million sales mark
Although Borderlands 2 launched in 2012, the game still seems to be doing well for itself as Gearbox has announced that the game has now sold over 12 million units since its September, 2012 release. In February last year it was announced that the game had sold 8.5 million units, making it 2K’s best ever title, now it has added 5 million sales on top of that in just a year.
This news comes ahead of the release of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection this Friday, March 27, which features Borderlands 2, Borderlands The Pre-Sequel and all DLC which has been released since both game’s have launched. It’ll also be the first time the game’s have landed on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
As for the original Borderlands, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said that a HD remake of the original isn’t out of the question, but it depends on sales of the Handsome Collection.
“We announced [The Handsome Collection] after the Xbox One launched. And a lot of people that had upgraded, they really wanted the Pre-Sequel on that platform,” he said. “So, we got a lot of people telling us ‘Please bring this to next-gen’ and our publishing partner 2K games thought it was probably worth doing. We were too busy, we didn’t have the resources to do the upgrade.
“[So] we looked around for partners and found some folks up in Chicago known as Iron Galaxy and some folks down in Austin known Armature, who are experts are this kind of stuff. And they were able to jump in and port it. They found that because Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel was on the same engine as Borderlands 2, we were able to get it as basically a free bonus.”
