It’s an Avengers year. That’s a phrase I want to toss around when an Avengers film opens at the box office.
This week we’re going to look at one of the many branches of the mighty oak which is known as The Avengers. At the moment there just isn’t one team of Avengers. There are many variations including the Secret Avengers, Young Avengers, Pet Avengers and the Mighty Avengers.
How did the Mighty Avengers begin? With a story about Ultron which probably won’t make it into any of the films.
It started back after The Civil War, the battle between superheroes where one side wanted all heroes to register with The Government and the other wanted to be independent. The independent side was led by Iron Man and the other was led by Captain America.
The independent side lost. The small group of independents formed an underground group of Avengers and operated in secret. Iron Man decided to put together an ‘official’ team of Avengers. They were called The Mighty Avengers.
This team consisted of Iron Man, Ms. Marvel (now Captain Marvel), The Wasp, Black Widow, Wonder Man (an old Avengers favourite who’s also an actor) and Ares (the God of War)
The team’s first mission was to take down an invasion by the Mole Man and his mole themed beasts (yes really, he began life as a Fantastic Four villain and is responsible for the first iconic cover). This is when Tony Stark loses control of his armour (a surprisingly common occurrence for technological genius) and becomes the latest host for Ultron. This time in the form of a nude woman.
Taking over the collection of Iron Man armour and causing havoc all over the planet the Mighty Avengers struggle to combat the new Ultron.
This is until the team enlist the help of Hank Pym (this is actually a Skrull in disguise), the creator of Ultron, by having him create a basic virus which is given to a shrunk down Ares who enters Ultron and introduces the virus.
Thus, Tony Stark is turned back to normal and Ultron goes to hide away for another day.
