The latest Ludum Dare game development competition has begun in earnest. This comp’s theme is “An Unconventional Weapon”.
Ludum Dare is an accelerated game development competition that takes place over a single weekend, and occurs three times a year. Geoff Howland founded the Ludum Dare community back in April 2002 and it’s gained momentum ever since. It’s both the longest running, and the largest online game jam in the world. The competition is generally focused on videogames, but card and board games are also accepted. Participants must create a game from scratch using the theme selected by the community’s popular vote. Developers are encouraged to broadcast the development of their creations, and there is a specific Twitch channel if you want to follow the excitement. Asset, source code and information sharing also takes place across a range of forums including Reddit and Twitter, which demonstrates the sense of community the competition brings.
Titan Souls is one of the most well-known games to have been originally developed during a Ludum Dare game jam, taking out the coveted title back in December 2013 under theme theme “You only get one” (one arrow, as it turned out, in the case of Titan Souls). Participation in the Ludum Dare compos and game jams have steadily been increasing over the years, and with less than a day left for developers to finish their work, there will no doubt be a great selection of entries. It will be interesting to see which game wins the current competition.
