ARK: Survival Evolved is a new open world survival game coming to PC and consoles where you can ride dinosaurs. No, we’re not joking

Set to launch on Steam’s Early Access as soon as June 2 and consoles a little later, ARK: Survival Evolved takes a different direction with the overdone survival genre. You’re no longer being chased by zombies, in fact, there are no zombies, ARK: Survival Evolved is all about dinosaurs and holy crap it looks amazing.

Currently in development at Studio Wildcard, this Jurassic survival title focuses on a “unique blend” of multiplayer co-operation and competition. Players will be able to explore a huge environment uncovering its many secrets such as an insane amount of dinosaurs which can be killed, and can kill. Oh, and you can mount them too.

The game which is powered by Unreal Engine 4, will see players awake barely clothed and starving on the beach of the island in which the game is set. But they won’t be alone, along with a swarm of other naked starving humans, and what lies within the island, players must fight to survive by learning to hunt, harvest, craft, research technology, build shelters, and more to survive not only what awaits within the island but the weather and environment too.

The press release also adds:

Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame and ride the many dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground. Build your character’s strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems. Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes…and ultimately discover the ARK’s true purpose.

The game is set to feature 60 dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts which you can tame, if you’re clever enough, including creatures of massive proportions. I really hope you can tame and ride a Diplodocus! What has been confirmed is the ability to ride a Pterodactyls, Raptors, Brontosaurus, and even a T. Rex. Holy CRAP that sounds incredible.

Along with the threat of wildlife in ARK: Survival Evolved it also seems that players will also be the enemy as teams of others can band together to create tribes to take-down other players and steal their resources, not only that they’ll also be able to gain experience as a tribe as well as create respawn points, villages, cities, and technology which could span from stone-age technology all the way to the electric-powered era and beyond. Think Civilization but in first person form, with dinosaurs.

ARK: Survival Evolved is set to launch on Early Access on June 2 and then land on PlayStation 4, and Xbox One via the [email protected] Program in 2016. The PC release is also expected to fully launch by 2016 too complete with Oculus Rift VR support, as well as Steam Economy and Steam Workshop for players to create custom maps and mods.
