DC Arrow Flash

We have Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, iZombie, Supergirl, Titans… And now Legends of Tomorrow. The DC TV-verse is ever growing.

Information about Legends of Tomorrow have slowly been coming out in dribs and drabs over the past couple months or so, but we’ve yet to get a full grasp on what the show will exactly be about and what exactly it’s going to be. This post will cover what we know already, perhaps a little speculation and an attempt to figure out how this is going to work and where it fits into all these shows.

DC’s been doing a pretty top job with their TV department at the moment. The Flash and Arrow are both renewed over on The CW, Supergirl and Legends already ordered for a full season each and it just looks like the cast is ever growing in this big, wonderful mix of superheroes.

Spoilers ahead for The Flash and Arrow! Read with caution!

From the beginning, we knew that the team would consist of Arrow heroes The Atom, The Canary (not Black Canary) alongside The Flash villains Heatwave and Captain Cold, The Flash hero in the Dr Stein half of Firestorm, as well as new faces Hawkgirl, Rip Hunter and Jay Jackson.

The Atom (Brand Routh) is an obvious choice to start with, in a show like Arrow with so many supporting heroes already it always made sense that he go off to get started on something of his own with another team. Plus, guys like Ray Palmer are too bright and lovely for the doom and gloom of Starling City. He deserves a bigger break to show his stuff.

When it was announced that Caity Lotz might be returning to don the mantel of The Canary, it understandably confused a lot of people. See, Sara Lance died in the beginning of the current season of Arrow and it got a whole bunch of questions raised about how she was going to be in this. Theories ranged from the Lazerus Pit, Speedforce and ‘Herbforce’ as Redditers joke about. My initial thought, before it was revealed what the apparent plot was going to be, was that these would be individual vignettes of each hero. Mini stories as such between them all that could possibly follow Sara during her days with the League. Now? It makes more sense, still open to interpretation, but I’ll get on to that a bit later, more characters to discuss first!

Ambiguous villains Heatwave (Dominic Purcell) and Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) will be returning, who have become an incredibly popular duo on The Flash. It’ll be fantastic to see these two rogues put to good use, because as it’s been highlighted in The Flash already, even though the two crooks are bad guys, they’re not bad guys. I’m sure if Rip wafts enough cash underneath these two’s noses that he’ll have then easily in check and working alongside the team. There’s fun there already after The CW’s fun little Fight Club video with the two rogues, it makes sense to let them get a little more of the limelight.

I expect that because we’re missing the Ronnie half of Firestorm, Dr Martin Stein (Victor Garber) will be playing more of a support role to the team. Unless they’ve somehow figured out how one can be Firestorm without the other… Either way, my theory is that Stein will be the guy back at base being the Felicity/Caitlin/Cisco to the team.

In with the new guys then! We learned not too long ago that Hawkgirl will be joining the team (Ciara Renee). This will be the first time the character has made it to live action, and it’s exciting that we get to see Hawkgirl before Hawkman, because let’s face it, Hawkgirl’s way cooler. Chances are we’ll be seeing a New 52 style Kendra Saunders, who is a treasure hunter. I imagine her wings could be linked to the particle accelerator explosion in Central City, but that remains to be seen.

The mysterious Jay Jackson will be joining the team, who is an entirely new character we know next to nothing about other than the fact Franz Drameh will be playing him. It’s implied that he has a connection with S.T.A.R. Labs and is an auto mechanic who gains powers, again likely from the accelerator explosion, but no one yet has been able to say for sure who he is. Rumour has it he could be playing either Black Lightning or Static, after implications an electricity powered hero would be joining the team.

Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) is the man who seems to be bringing this rag tag team together. Rip is a time traveller who comes back from the future in the hope to put together a team to stop a force that may destroy the fabric of time and space itself. No pressure.

This is where I think Sara comes back in. I don’t think she’s being resurrected, as some speculate. One of the more popular theories is that Sara will be resurrected via the stolen waters from the Lazerus Pit mentioned in Arrow, so that Sara can take on the rumoured mantel of White Canary. I think White Canary is an option, to make a clear separation between Sara and Laurel, but I think Rip will just snatch her from the past when she was still alive and bring her back to the present and confusing the ever loving hell out of everyone doing it.

Interestingly, if this leaked set photo has anything to say about Sara’s return, it’s going to mess with some heads…

Hey look, Ollie’s back in his Arrow suit. Yeeey!

It’s said we’ll also be seeing Rip and Hawkgirl in the season one finale of The Flash. I expect we won’t actually see them go chat to Barry, but they’ll be there to go and find Heatwave and Captain Cold instead, to recruit them to the new team. Maybe they will lend a hand to The Flash as they go, but I don’t think it’ll be likely. The photo above I imagine will be from the first episode of Legends, where Oliver and Barry get to find out a little more about what’s going on, and how they’re going to be borrowing Ray for a while.

The synopsis of the show was revealed recently as well…

When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat – one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?

One rumour points to this ‘immortal threat’ as being no other than iconic DC villain Vandal Savage. Whilst it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Savage could certainly stir up a whole lot of trouble for the team with his super intelligence and fighting skill. Though, I actually think that the villain will be none other than Darkseid. Not a full powered Darkseid mind you, because holy cow that guy is powerful and he’d comfortably kick these street level heroes into orbit. However, if anyone can potentially destroy everything they know and love in one fell swoop, it’ll be him. Also, didn’t they say that Supergirl will be in the same universe as these guys…? Hmmmm?

There’s also some hope that in the rush to rescue Constantine from being cancelled, that maybe The CW ought to snap him up and throw him into the Legends where he can be put to good use and get some more love, which would definitely be an interesting notion.

That seems to be everything so far in the world of Legends of Tomorrow, for now. Stay tuned for more news as it comes! Let us know what you think about all these superhero shows flooding our networks at the moment, too many, just right? Have I missed out anything you’d like to add? Let us know!

Small correction – the villain you’re thinking of is Vandal Savage. :)

Woops! Where the heck did I get Randal from?? That’s exactly who I meant, thank you! I’ll amend that now :)
